SOCIAL SKILLS

Social Skills instruction occurs naturally throughout the day but may also be targeted as an IEP goal. Students have many opportunities to participate in different social activities. Group projects, game playing, video modeling and role-playing along with positive reinforcment are just some of the strategies used to teach appropriate social skills. Some areas of social focus are:

  • Friendship – Empathy, Rejection, Compromise, Interests, Personal Space
  • Winning and Losing – Games, Sports, Turn Taking
  • Making Decisions – Choices, Outcomes, Being Right, Being Wrong
  • Following Rules – Staying Safe
  • Conversation Cues – How and when to start and end, Turn Taking
  • Organization – Flexibility, Planning, Effort, Mistakes
  • Confidence – Self-Advocacy, Peer Pressure, Choosing Friends
